Walking in Northmavine is an unbeatable delight, offering 120 miles of the most spectacular coastline scenery in Shetland. There are easy short strolls to all day hikes for the fit and able, or you can climb Ronas Hill, our highest land mass, and then marvel at the panoramic view of Shetland below you.
Birds are everywhere, and it's a great feeling when you
spot a rare one.
If you walk inland to the more remote lochs, you can see many nesting birds
including Red Throated Divers, Whooper Swans and excellent news - Red Necked
Phalaropes have been seen this last two years on some of the lochs.
Wildlife is abundant around Almara and there are several places where otters frequent nearby. Otters are timid animals, but if you are quiet, patient and lucky you will see them. Seals, whales, porpoises and dolphins can be viewed along the coast. Rabbits and mountain hares are also to be seen.
Fishing is popular and some lochs are within a few minutes walk of Almara. Ronas Hill and Eshaness have some excellent lochs with gmaterial thood sized wild brown trout. There are also several spots where wild salmon and sea trout run but few fish were caught last year. Deep sea angling is also very rewarding and fishing trips can be arranged from Lerwick and Scalloway. Whichever angling you prefer, we say 'Tight Lines' to you.The Tangwick Haa Museum at Eshaness is an 18th Century Manor House with an interesting history and it displays many fascinating relics of this region. It also houses archive and genealogy
at you may find useful. Its well worth visiting and the friendly staff are very helpful.
An Inter
Island Car Ferry to the island of Yell and onwards to Unst and
Fetlar is only a half hours drive from Urafirth making it an excellent day
trip. Almara and the Chalet are ideally situated for exploring all of Shetland.
You do not need to have a car, but with one you will find it much easier to
get about and plan day trips to the other areas on the Mainland
of Shetland for each district has its own
special attractions and is worth visiting.
Public Transport There is a bus service each day, except Sundays. Departure is from Hillswick at 07.30 or 10.00 am to Lerwick each morning. Returning from Lerwick at 17.00hrs to Hillswick. This is a 1 hour journey.
Swimming in the sea around Shetland is safe and the waters clean. This crystal clear water also means perfect diving conditions on the many wrecks dotted along the rugged coastline of Northmavine. If however if you find the sea too cold for swimming, there is an indoor heated pool at Brae.
Please
allow yourself plenty of time to enjoy Northmavine.
It is not a place you can see or truly appreciate in a day or two.
